I've seen 1,867 films in my life, including 2 watched this year. My one-hundred most favorite comprise my Film Cannon, which is listed below. (I built a previous cannon way back in 2009.)

By design, my Film Cannon is deeply personal and self-indulgent. These aren't the films that I claim to be the best ever made; these are the movies that have meant the most to me personally. Some could argue there are some real stinkers on this list -- I am OK with that.

I also keep a list of Honorable Mentions, films that I adore but fall short of being cannon-worthy. Lastly, here's every other film I've ever seen.

Film Cannon: My Top 100 Most Films
My 1st Favorite Film

directed by Michael Mann

released in 1999

watched by me on March 16, 2009

The absolute paragon of my personal cinematic aesthetic -- the film with my favorite cinematography, music, subject matter, dialogue, performances, and overall aura. This may not be an objectively perfect film, but it's perfection for me.

My 2nd Favorite Film

directed by Larry Clark

released in 1995

watched by me on September 04, 2008

Painfully raw and authentic yet still perfectly narrative and accessible -- I've never seen a film marry those two extremes. As a friend once told me: this is a film that everyone should see once and perhaps no one should see twice.

My 3rd Favorite Film

directed by Jonathan Demme

released in 1991

watched by me on September 04, 2008

My mom snuck me into this movie in a Singaporean theatre when I was 10. I was surely too young, but the film left an unerasable and haunting yet wonderful footprint on my brain that I still cherish.

My 4th Favorite Film

directed by Sofia Coppola

released in 2003

watched by me on September 04, 2008

A love-letter of a film about that golden moment when you're floating between what you have been and what you'll soon become. This film has the second best ending in cinema history.

My 5th Favorite Film

directed by Terry Zwigoff

released in 1994

watched by me on September 04, 2008

A cinematic vehicle into the ID of a brilliant artist madman. At times terrifying, offensive, devastating -- never short of captivating. The best documentary I've ever seen.

My 6th Favorite Film

directed by Jonathan Glazer

released in 2000

watched by me on September 04, 2008

There was a two-week-ish period in college where I watched this film every. Single. Night. The dialogue rivals Shakespeare, Winstone and Kingsley are revelations, and Glazer's directing oozes cool.

My 7th Favorite Film

directed by R.J. Cutler

released in 2009

watched by me on September 27, 2009

This might be the film I've seen more times than any other. I have a natural affinity for stories set in the world of high fashion, but this documentary is special beyond its setting. It beautifully captures a moment in time from the point of view of exceptionally interesting and successful people, in an intensely personal way. The scene with Grace at Versailles is one of my favorite moments in film.

My 8th Favorite Film

directed by Paul Thomas Anderson

released in 1999

watched by me on September 04, 2008

My God, the hutzpah on this film! It should have fallen on its face as a self-indulgent, meandering dumpster fire -- and under any other hands than PT Anderson's, it would have. Instead, it's a cinematic masterpiece that captures from so many interesting angles what it means to hurt and be human.

My 9th Favorite Film

directed by Paul Thomas Anderson

released in 2007

watched by me on September 04, 2008

This is obviously a masterwork, across every dimension. Every decision made is objectively the perfect choice. Much like “2001,” this is a faultless film. It would probably be higher on my list if it wasn’t so universally beloved — this film doesn’t need me to love it.

My 10th Favorite Film

directed by Tom Ford

released in 2009

watched by me on February 16, 2010

I saw this film at a time when I was probably the saddest I've ever been. It was like medicine to see someone else hurting from loss as much as I was. Also, Ford's direction and shot selection are beyond gorgeous. One of my favorite all-time film lines: "Just get through the godamned day."

My 11th Favorite Film

directed by Nicole Holofcener

released in 2001

watched by me on September 04, 2008

Such a wonderfully small and honest film about complicated women living normal, interesting lives. I love how uneventful, unsentimental, and character-driven this film is allowed to be. My favorite moment: When the mother’s suddenly dire illness just…isn’t that bad, and everything turns out fine. Such an honest conclusion.

My 12th Favorite Film

directed by Amy Heckerling

released in 1995

watched by me on September 04, 2008

High school films are in my top three favorite genres, and this is my pick for the all-time best in that class. A film that is not only non-stop fun but so perfectly captures 90’s culture that it becomes important. Silverstone is also flawless.

My 13th Favorite Film

directed by Stanley Kubrick

released in 1968

watched by me on May 03, 2016

This isn’t a film that I can watch endlessly, which is why it’s not at the top of my list. Nonetheless, it is the single best overall film I’ve ever seen; the apex of humankind’s cinematic achievement. Yeah.

My 14th Favorite Film

directed by David Fincher

released in 1999

watched by me on September 04, 2008

The clarity and fidelity of this film’s point of view is intoxicating. This film knows exactly what it wants to say and how best to say it so that you’ll give a shit. Best of all, its message is both smart and novel. Remember: “You’re not your fucking khakis.”

My 15th Favorite Film

directed by Sam Mendes

released in 1999

watched by me on September 04, 2008

A film that so perfectly captures the sickness that often accompanies the suburban American experience. I care about everyone in this story, and that feels wonderful. Best scene: When Lester’s life is flashing in front of him, and he focuses above all on his daughter’s face: “…and Jane, and Jane, and Jane…” I imagine my life’s flashback will look the same with my kids.

My 16th Favorite Film

directed by Lena Dunham

released in 2010

watched by me on August 13, 2012

Lena Dunham’s point of view is fascinating, and this film provides the opportunity to swim around her head for two hours. The choices Dunham makes directing this film are utterly unique and at times brave. This is my all-time favorite directorial debut.

My 17th Favorite Film

directed by Lisanne Pajot, James Swirsky

released in 2012

watched by me on June 22, 2012

I love watching passionate and eccentric people navigate interesting sub-cultures. This documentary perfectly captures what it means to sacrifice almost everything you have to create something amazing, and how doing can be so worth it. This film is towards the top of my “times watched” list, as I consumed it basically everyday for a couple of months in 2012.

My 18th Favorite Film

directed by Terry Zwigoff

released in 2001

watched by me on September 04, 2008

Real magic exists in the summer between high school and college, and this is the film that captures that moment. Birch and Johansson deliver quiet and honest performances, and Buscemi is brilliantly Buscemi. It’s impossible to capture the mood of an alternative comic book, but somehow not for Zwigoff.

My 19th Favorite Film

directed by Larry Clark

released in 2001

watched by me on September 04, 2008

My 20th Favorite Film

directed by Ondi Timoner

released in 2004

watched by me on September 04, 2008

My 21st Favorite Film

directed by Jake Clennell

released in 2006

watched by me on November 26, 2009

A deeply engrossing documentary about a Japanese subculture you'd never believe actually existed. This film is a perfect example of not only how weird and complex human problems are, but also how even weirder are the solutions that we construct.

My 22nd Favorite Film

directed by David O. Russell

released in 2004

watched by me on September 04, 2008

An entirely unique -- at times esoteric -- amalgamation of Zen Buddhism ideals with the struggles of every day modern life. One of the funnier films I've ever seen. Best quote: "How am I not myself?"

My 23rd Favorite Film

directed by Bernardo Bertolucci

released in 2003

watched by me on September 04, 2008

A story of youth, family, passion, and defiance set in Paris amid turbulent political times. I distinctly remember how I felt after finishing this film: disturbed, buzzing, and wholly alive -- only great movies can make you feel like this.

My 24th Favorite Film

directed by Richard Linklater

released in 1993

watched by me on April 23, 2009

Perhaps the most immersive film experience I've ever had -- I loved loved loved living in this world. Most certainly the best 24-hour storyline I've ever seen; undoubtedly the best hang-out movie of all-time.

My 25th Favorite Film

directed by Sydney Pollack

released in 1995

watched by me on September 04, 2008

Oh, how I adore this movie. Considered by most a flop, I fell in love with it: the story, Julia Ormond, and above all the lifestyle of its characters. My favorite quote: “Sabrina fair, listen where thou art sitting under the glassy, cool, translucent wave, in twisted braids of lilies knitting the loose train of thy amber-dropping hair.”

My 26th Favorite Film

directed by George P. Cosmatos

released in 1993

watched by me on September 04, 2008

This is one of those films that played repeatedly on HBO in the 90s, resulting in me having seen it countless time. A deeply entertaining movie with truly memorable performances. And how can I pick my favorite “Tombstone” quote — there’s just so many to choose from. I guess I’ll go with the most obvious: “I’m your huckleberry.”

My 27th Favorite Film

directed by John Dahl

released in 1998

watched by me on September 04, 2008

This film presents such a wonderfully insulated and fully realized world. Everyone in the story is tragically interesting, the result of having over-developed a highly specific skill to the exclusion of others. I left this film fantasizing about one day becoming Mike McDermott, making a modest living under dim lights and surrounded by cigarette smoke in casinos and backrooms.

My 28th Favorite Film

directed by George Miller

released in 1992

watched by me on September 04, 2008

This is one of those films that has just always been a part of my life — I can't remember the first time I saw it, but I was very young. For some reason, I unintentionally rewatch this film every decade or so — it just somehow happens. As such, this film is just a part of my consciousness. It's a beautifully crafted, deeply heartfelt story that I will always adore.

My 29th Favorite Film

directed by Nicholas Hytner

released in 1998

watched by me on September 04, 2008

This a horribly underappreciated, almost entirely forgotten gem — in fact, I've never met another person that has heard of this film. And that's a shame, as it's such an effortlessly fun and honest movie with wonderful performances from Rudd and Aniston. Best quote (from Alan Alda when his character isn't feeling well): "Fan me with The New Yorker."

My 30th Favorite Film

directed by Steve McQueen

released in 2011

watched by me on December 18, 2011

Brutally honest and profoundly powerful. A genuine depiction of how addiction can grab hold of you and drag you deep into hell on Earth. Fassbender should have won the Oscar for this performance. Difficult to stomach in parts but never short of fascinating, this is one of the most viscerally memorable films I’ve ever seen.

My 31st Favorite Film

directed by Francois Truffaut

released in 1959

watched by me on September 04, 2008

I found this film by reading the late and great Roger Ebert's book "The Great Movies." I was heart-broken by the movie — small, simple, slow, and above all singularly obsessed with being truthful to its protagonist. The fact that it was released in 1959 is staggering.

My 32nd Favorite Film

directed by Penelope Spheeris

released in 1992

watched by me on September 04, 2008

In 1993, my dad’s job moved us to Yemen for six months. Knowing that Yemen didn’t really have television or movie theatres, we stocked up on VHS tapes before we left the US – we probably bought over 100! When we arrived in Yemen, their Customs Department individually reviewed each VHS, and decided that all but about 5 were “inappropriate” to bring into the country. One of the five, thank God, was “Wayne’s World.” As a result, my brother and I quite literally watched this film every day, sometimes twice in a day. This movie will always hold a special place in my heart -- I can quote almost every scene, word-for-word.

My 33rd Favorite Film

directed by Hayao Miyazaki

released in 2001

watched by me on September 04, 2008

No other film has transported me so completely out of the real world into its world as deeply as this one. I’ll never forget the scene when our heroes are riding the subway – it felt like I was right there with them. This is why I watch movies – to temporarily leave my world and experience another reality. Miyazaki is a master.

My 34th Favorite Film

directed by Cameron Crowe

released in 2000

watched by me on September 04, 2008

I loved getting to experience this journey with Patrick Fugit’s character – it was so fun to be along for the ride as he went from high school student to on tour with a famous band writing for Rolling Stone. This film feels made for me, as that’s a journey that is so much one that I wish I could have had. The performances and music are also wonderful. Best scene: When they are on the bus and singing “Tiny Dancer.”

My 35th Favorite Film

directed by Gus Van Sant

released in 1997

watched by me on September 04, 2008

The first time I saw this film I spent the whole time arguing with my girlfriend in the theatre (about something I’ve long forgotten). Despite my deeply split attention, even then I knew that this was a great film (which has since been confirmed during my subsequent dozen or so viewings). I love the simplicity of the story, the seemingly effortless yet wonderful performances, and how much Sant allows the city of Boston to become a major character. “My boy’s wicked smaaart.”

My 36th Favorite Film

directed by John Cameron Mitchell

released in 2001

watched by me on December 24, 2008

Genius shines through, no matter how obscure, strange, or narrow the offering. Hedwig's story and songs are like nothing I've ever seen before -- I knew immediately Mitchell's film was special. For some reason, the quote I remember most is: "You don't put a bra in a dryer! It warps!"

My 43rd Favorite Film

directed by Chris Hegedus, Jehane Noujaim

released in 2001

watched by me on September 04, 2008

An excellent pure direct cinema documentary — these filmmakers were at the perfect place at the perfect time and they were smart and humble enough to shut up and just record. The film tells a fascinating story about life right before the dot com bust from the point of view of a hot startup run by smart but naive protagonists.
